A few days ago we took a short break in the ancient city of Chester with its Roman and Medieval architecture and history. However few tourists know of the city’s heritage from the Industrial Revolution with thriving cotton mills and a canal connecting them.
The old canal runs around part of the Roman walls and out to the Telford’s Wharf area where old mill buildings have been converted into apartments. My walk around here inspired todays Haiku as I thought about the impermanence of those mills and the lives of those who toiled for the “revolution”.
Bright barges glide through
The Two Doctors
Canals reflecting old mills,
Wistful ghosts look down.
