This weeks #challengeyourcamera is another “mind bender”, something to access the creative side of your brain. It doesn’t need you to go out and you will probably not have anything that suits from your archives! You might play with this for the whole week, but you’ll learn lots from trying!
You’re probably familiar with still life in art – those paintings that depict a bowl of fruit or flowers in a vase. Those are classic examples of a still life. But even when you’re familiar with the concept, you might not know exactly what makes a still life …… a still life!
Still Life Photography-The Complete Guide
In a nutshell, a still life is a work of art that focuses on inanimate objects. Usually commonplace objects which can include both man made objects (vases, items of clothing, and consumer products) and natural objects (plants, food, rocks, shells) as examples.
Still Life Photography-The Complete Guide
I know that many of you take photos of flowers, food, books, wine …… all are possible subjects for still life. But unlike other branches of photography you are in complete control of the subject material, you choose it, you arrange it, you choose the angle etc to snap it from. THAT is complete control. The two quotes I have used above are from a simple but very clear and informative guide on still life photography so do click the link and have a read of it. You will get plenty of ideas to play with.
Now here are some of my own examples, I assure you all taken with my iphone and mostly at home, some in the kitchen, one in a hotel, one in my shed.

Last Week’s Roll of Honour #10 Close Up
I’ve had a slight problem this week with commenting on a few posts, not all, just a few. I know that WordPress can be a bit buggy at times so that may be the reason. In some cases though I miss a post from someone because if they haven’t followed me i haven’t followed them either and so I don’t get email alerts and miss their posts. I rely most on email alerts because I use push notifications for all emails rather than alerts in the WordPress reader which is less reliable. So, message is clear, follow me, I’ll follow you back, and everything works. Well ….. nearly😂.

The Rules
Each week I am selecting a single theme to point my camera at or display a few photos from my collection as a way to brighten up the week as we enter a new year which we all hope will be brighter than the last. If you would like to join me in #challengeyourcamera then here’s what to do:
1 Follow me to discover the weekly theme I have chosen.
2 Select a few photos related to the week’s theme
3 Post your own photos that week, any day you like.
4 Include a caption with each photo so we know what/where it is
5 Include a link to my blog in your post so that I am notified and can follow you back
6 Add a pingback/link to YOUR post in the comment section of MY post on that weeks theme.
7 Include the tag #challengeyourcamera
1 I will follow you back
2 I will encourage other posters to follow you
3 I will list each blogger in my weekly post in arrears

Those are enticing looking vegetables – the beans are particularly interesting with that special shaped one at the bottom.
Not sure if you are getting my pings, but here is my link to “Close-up”:

Hi Dr B,
Nice one! I enjoyed your step-by-step guide to setting up a shoot. Amazing backdrop. Where do you get them, please? Here’s my contribution for this week: https://wordpress.com/post/marilynunmasked.blog/10814
Totally agree with you on the vaccination roll-out. Here in Snowdonia we can now ‘go local’ – 5 miles. That means we can go South (almost) to the next village, or North to Caernarfon. Being so rural we’re allowed to stretch our distance but it still doesn’t get us to a decent restaurant (when they open). But we’ll enjoy it all the more when it finally happens. 😀🍷🥘

Hi, my backdrops came from Amazon, here’s the link. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Selens-Background-Photography-Cosmetics-Photographer/dp/B0832JMHK1
We’re fairly rural too, though no mountains. No decent restaurants for 10 miles, but …. a new winery opens its doors on April 12th so looking forward to that! Thanks for your entry, going over to yours to look now 🙏

Do you do wine posts or collect as a hobby?

Dr B – you’re joking me! Never posted about wine – and as for collecting ….
I have been fortunate in that my first red wine was a Nuits St Georges and I was introduced to St Emilion Grand Cru by a superb wine waiter (who also suggested I might enjoy Sambuca! Not wrong there.).
My best friend in South Australia worked for a chap who collected particular wines (I can’t recall the name but the vineyards who supply the grapes are especially chosen) and a friend of my parents grew grapes that were awarded this prestigious distinction). Needless to say, I’ve never sampled any.

Be careful! We had our first jabs about 8 weeks ago now so are awaiting the follow up jab any week now. It will be a few weeks before our restaurants, bars and shops open, our government have handled things really well and the organisation of jabs across the country has been very precise. We are now vaccinating the 40-50 year olds. Really looking forward to being able to travel again, I have so many English vineyards to visit so we will be touring England for at least the rest of this year.
