The wine behind the photo: #3 Meursault

The village of Meursault nestles amongst the perfectly aligned Chardonnay vines, surrounded by the equally famous villages of Volnay and Pommard to the north, and Puligny Montrachet to the south. All are illustrious winemaking areas, each having a unique expression of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay depending on their equally unique terroir. Meursault is our favourite for Chardonnay and the Domaine Francois Gaunoux our winemaker of choice, especially their walled monopole climat, Clos de Tavaux.

“A clear and bright golden-green colour, a nose of great finesse with aromas of lime, hawthorn and butter notes, hazelnuts and honey depending on the “climat”, i.e the soil – that’s the calling card of a Meursault wine. Whether you’re an amateur or a connoisseur, the aromatic power of the wine of Meursault, a magical balance between smoothness and freshness, and its length on the palate impress.” (Beaune Tourism)

    • Very kind, thank you. Meursault is a great place to stay to explore and fully appreciate burgundy, it is surrounded by so many appellations in all directions. Chablis is detached, but just over an hours drive away and worth an overnight stay before returning to Meursault. 🙏🙏🍷

      • Good to know! I’m on chapter 8 of your book all about your travels in Burgundy and I must say if these regions seem difficult to navigate, your stories and experiences make it personable and approachable. If I ever visit Burgundy, I’ll have the help of your advice and recommendations!

      • I’m very interested in your view of the final chapter “What was all that about” but no spoilers from me. 😓😓

      • Well I think we both know where our points of disagreement are, and I can’t say that’s changed, however I might have a better understanding of your point of view based on your experiences, and I’m determined to be benevolent. I’ll let you know!
