Children of Ruin is the second book in the Children of Time science fiction series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I have read the first, but it was a real battle to keep going as the timeline of the plot switched backwards and forwards across a thousand years, and between an Earth ark ship, a scientific mission ship, and a planet of spiders! You will need to have read this first novel to stand even a remote chance of understanding or following this second novel!
However I’m afraid that the words “meandering”, “irrelevant details”, “confusing” all immediately spring to mind as I review this book. After 2-3 hours I was bored stiff with reading about one of the scientists on the ship attempting to develop the behaviour and intelligence of ……. small octopi in tanks in his laboratory! I gave up, life’s too short to suffer this when there seems no promise of anything better. Thankfully Audible policy is to take back any books you don’t like ….. no questions asked!

Sometimes the second book just doesn’t do it. I agree, life is too short to read something that bores you. On to the next book.
