Truro is the administrative capital of Cornwall and its only city, but there are three other towns in the county which are larger settlements! We spent half a day here exploring the museum and the cathedral. The Royal Cornwall Museum naturally focuses on local history from Palaeolithic times, and the cathedral has some fine examples of the work of the woodcarver Violet Pinwill …. if you can find them!

How useful it is to have someone in Cornwall showing the places of interest just a week before I go there myself.
For a couple of years in the 1990s I used to go to Truro to help out with a couple of waste collection contracts in Cornwall (Carrick and Kerrier) and I used to like to stay at the Royal Hotel on Lemon Street. I think it is now called Mannings Royal.
I think I will go to Truro next week.

Truro is a quaint place, narrow streets and we used the Park & Ride, easy, stops by cathedral in Victoria Square, returns from Museum. We visited Restormel Castle, a ruin owned by the Black Prince, a nice hour exploring. Wheal Coates is interesting on NT land with a car park outside St Agnes, great coastal paths and views. Perranporth is near St Agnes, brilliant ice cream parlour (actually quite a few in the village) Perran Dairy make their own, massive banana splits, knickerbockers etc, kids will love it. Car park right by the beach. Geevor mine you know about, check if Levant next door has its engine working.

Good idea Andrew! We live a bit away from the M5 but Champa likes to visit Gloucester Services now and again, I know …. bizarre! It’s actually a Farm Shop and lots of facilities and food outlets. But, it’s confusing whether it’s the same northbound as well as southbound. Take a look on google maps, if we choose it as a place to meet we’ll come at it on the northbound side so you don’t end up in the dreaded Forest of Dean! If it suits we can work out communication strategies, chronological synchronicity and other details 👍

Sounds good, I’d like that. Our route home will take us from Gloucester to Banbury to Daventry where we will stay overnight with my mum before going home the day after.
