“Pasties & Places”

It took 4 hours to drive from our Cotswolds home to the Newquay area yesterday, only 208 miles but lots of comfort breaks! First stop on this GenTravelling holiday was St Agnes, the small village on the West Cornwall coast, famed for its tin mines and expert miners, made famous by the Poldark TV series who used the local Wheal Coates mine as occasional backdrop.

My great great great grandfather lived here so “the game’s afoot Watson” as we spent the afternoon exploring the local heritage museum, a cemetery, a Miners & Mechanics Institute, and the ruins of Wheal Coates mine. No pasties yet so a couple of personal “Places” postcards.

What did we discover? Well you’ll have to wait a bit for that but it includes a grave of a John Waters d.1893, a chapel of rest split in two for reasons based on religion, and something about Balmaidens. Tomorrow? A few pasties I hope!
