This is my second reading of this book and infinitely more enjoyable than the first, but that’s my own fault. When I first bought it I was looking for inspiration for my blog, I had dried up and thought I could find some philosophy sound bites for topics to write about. It worked, but I found a few months later that I had no real recollection of the “tone or philosophy” of the book overall. So, second time around and I am so glad I loaded it up again on my iPad.

Authors Cathcart and Klein
The book is organised into 10 sections each covering a major approach or area of philosophy such as Metaphysics, Ethics, Existentialism and treats all of them in a relatively light hearted way. It is NOT a textbook and would probably be enjoyed most by someone wanting a quick skim through these philosophy approaches, or by someone who already has a reasonable knowledge of philosophy and would appreciate the jokes, anecdotes and modern day examples.
For example, a joke about Eternity and Infinity:
“”A woman is told by her doctor that she has six months to live. “Is there anything I can do?” she asks. “Yes, there is,” the doctor replies. “You could marry a tax accountant.” “How will that help my illness?” the woman asks. “Oh, it won’t help your illness,” says the doctor, “but it will make that six months seem like an eternity!””
The jokes may not create riotous laughter but they ARE fit for purpose in illuminating the philosophy concept being discussed.
My favourite section? Existentialism….. and relating it to wine tasting just to annoy my fruit salad bingo expert friends!
Overall the 10 sections flow together well and in a couple of mornings I’d reread the whole book and can recommend it as a fun read.
