Picture behind the story #3 A broken sandal in Kathmandu

A personal PhotoChallenge matching a story to a photo every day for 30 days with short tales of travel, mountaineering, Nepal, art, and a few personal ones too!

3. A broken sandal in Kathmandu

It was Dr C’s first return to her home in Kathmandu for 15 years! She was the first woman from Nepal to get a PhD, in ANY subject, and her government were definitely not pleased that she hadn’t returned in 1971! We were warned that if she returned to Nepal they may not let her return to Britain again, but after a number of government changes we were told it was now “safe”. So, August 1983 we travelled to Kathmandu with our two young children, Michael 8, Sharon 6, and what adventures we had! The photo below is a personal memory of Sharon having snapped the strap of her sandal and finding a street cobbler to repair it somewhere in the muddy streets of Kathmandu. Our children were fascinated by so many simple things on this visit, it was an education in culture, geography, race, religion, humanity and poverty you couldn’t get from books or school. Even repairing something instead of discarding it and buying a new one was a new experience.

  1. What an amazing experience for your children, one they will never forget. As a child, I would have loved it and probably kept those sandals forever!
