There’s something about Budapest that is mindfully magnetic to me since our first visit 18 months ago. We are back again for Christmas and staying at a very upmarket hotel, The Buddha Bar, at Elizabeth Bridge on the banks of The Danube, and looking forward to the usual Christmas markets, the goulash, Furmint, the Astoria, Buda Castle, Széchenyi Thermal Baths, the Basilica, gypsy folk music, tram rides, a river cruise ……

But it all begins with a bus ride, something we do in every major city we visit; Madrid, Cadiz, Rome, all explored initially from the top of a Big Bus showing us the main sights and giving us an orientation for our week long visit. For around £20 you get a two day pass to hop on/hop off as many times as you like PLUS a river cruise on the Danube, an absolute bargain!

So, with Sharon and Michael visiting for the first time we “hopped on” right outside our hotel and didn’t “hop off” until we had done a full circuit taking around one hour, and  here’s a sample of what we saw on a dark winters day:
