Mindfulness in travel is focused on history for us,{ Local:Churches as history teachers }and this has been obvious from our recent posts as we began the Tour of England. The Industrial Midlands saw us exploring the history of the Industrial Revolution via The Potteries, Ironbridge and ironmaking, as well as The Victorian Town at Blists Hill. Mappa Mundi was a bonus at Hereford Cathedral on our way back home. The South Coast followed a similar pattern last week, though the Saxon and medieval era dominated the trip with a Battle of Hastings re-enactment, Rochester Castle & Cathedral, Dover Castle all being visited and posted. The Historic Dockyard at Chatham and The Royal Observatory and its exhibition about longitude were major visits too.
So that’s two of our five regions of England completed and the remaining three will be visited next year from Spring onwards. History will again feature in our day-to-day trips as we maximise our membership of English Heritage visiting even more castles, cathedrals and abbeys in the South West, Yorkshire and Northumbria. Our next travel adventure will be VERY different as we set sail on another Mediterranean Cruise for 18 days and explore Pompeii, Herculaneum, Syracuse and many more places steeped in ancient history. We’ll keep you posted from most ports of call, so do follow and give us your comments. Suggestions of sites, restaurants, bars VERY welcome for Cadiz, Cagliari, Catania, La Spezia, Valletta, Toulon, Barcelona (if we dock!) and Valencia.
