Dughla Bridge-Nepal Himalaya
Scale is a relative term, especially in relation to mountains, and it is only when you stand surrounded by or on top of Himalayan peaks you can fully appreciate this. I have been a lucky mountaineer, I began in the small peaks of Cumbria when I was young, then up-scale somewhat into Wales and Scotland. In middle age I graduated into the Alps of Austria, Switzerland and France. Then …… I was ready to stride amongst the Himalayan peaks of Nepal and to stand on top of a few at around 22,000 ft, next to the absolute monsters of 29,000 ft. And every time I went into the Solu Kumbhu region I was reminded of my insignificance as I crossed this bridge at Dughla as the torrent from the Kumbhu glacier smashed into boulders as big as houses. The scale of everything is overwhelming.
And then, you take that ONE photo that upstages the scale of the moraine around Dughla …… the peak of Ama Dablam with another mountaineer silhouetted against it as the sun goes down. Oh happy days!

Love both these photos! Those boulders are so huge when you stand next to them. But when you’re underneath the mountain… you need your own personal pano vision to be able to see it all!!

The next morning was THE best morning… waking up at 6am in the freezing cold but to a perfect blue sky with the Himalayas literally feeling like they were on top of us! Breathtaking.
