A different kind of post from the blog of Andrew Petcher writing about the “original” Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In his “Have Bag Will Travel” blog Andrew writes a great deal about the culture and history of the place he visits and there is much to learn from reading his posts, so do visit his site. This post is an “imaginary visit” I suppose but it does provide temptation to travel to some of the areas where these Wonders were originally located.
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were by no means a comprehensive agreed-upon list of the most impressive structures of the day. Today a list like this would be determined by a TV phone-in. The masterpieces included in the original list are the traditionally accepted Wonders as first set down by Philo of Byzantium although when he drew up the list he had no way of knowing about the Great Wall of China, the Treasury at Petra or Stonehenge.
