Monument Valley

As young students we were hooked on cowboy movies, The Magnificent Seven, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Pale Rider, True Grit, Chisum, and the extremely violent Wild Bunch starring William Holden. So many of them featured scenery from Monument Valley, another natural wonder on Dr Cs list recorded here in colour this time.
Sandstone buttes, rock pinnacles and shifting red sands are the main geological features which have shaped our perception of every Western movie ever made. However this is also home to the Navajo Nation and the largest Native American reservation in the US. Although they lost almost everything in the 1800s there are now around 300,000 Navajo mostly working as shepherds and farmers, though there are many craftspeople selling their wares in roadside stalls and trading posts.

The wonders of this great land of ours…that we have the freedom to sit in awe and behold this beauty…we are lucky. 🙂
Thank you for sharing these epic images. You captured them beautifully.

Surely one of the best film locations ever. So which is your favourite western?

Good question Andrew, discussed ad nauseum on our coach. We remember best The Wild Bunch from our student days, very very violent. Yours?

‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’ or ‘Shane’ or any western film with Jimmy Stewart. That is cheating I know but I can never really decide.

Know what you mean, we have a long list too but the violence of the wild bunch, the acting of William Holden plus it being a strong student memory swung it for us. We had another that came close with a great portrayal of Doc Halliday by Val Kilmer but struggled to recall the title ….. Wyatt Earp maybe?

The film is ‘Tombstone’. Kurt Russell plays Wyatt Earp. what about ‘Magnificent Seven’?

A great cast in that film. As well as Holden there was Robert Ryan and possibly Ernest Borgnine’s finest role?

Yes, I think Ryan was the bounty hunter chasing them
