Camera across America #2 The Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam

Enlight141
The Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Originally called Boulder Dam it was eventually named after President Herbert Hoover.
Before construction began around 20,000 unemployed workers came to the area hoping to find work which was the beginning of the formation of Boulder City. However only 3000-5000 were ever employed with the best paid being the “dynamiters” at the vast sum of $7 per week!
Today the Dam’s generators provide power to Nevada, Arizona and California and is classed as a National Historic Monument mainly because of its engineering innovations.
The photos tell the story of our tour today.
